What is Shaolin Kung Fu?

A 1500-year-old legacy, the spirit of Shaolin kung fu has claimed worldwide fame. As the saying goes, “all martial arts under heaven arose out of Shaolin”.

Shaolin Kung Fu is believed to be the oldest institutionalized style of kung fu and is one of the most famous martial arts. In essence, Shaolin Kung Fu refers to a collection of Chinese martial arts that claim affiliation with the Shaolin Monastery.

Shaolin Kung Fu is believed to be the forefather of all Chinese (and other) martial arts; its many barehanded and weapon styles have served as inspiration for other disciplines.

Our martial arts curriculum not only emphasizes the teaching of martial arts, but the combination of meditation and kung fu. Through meditation, students learn to calm down, thus increasing their ability to concentrate in learning; through the movements of kung fu, healthier physique is achieved.

Thus, the body and mind can find balance internally and externally. In today’s society, many teachers and parents struggle with students’ disrespectfulness and lack of attention in class or at home.

One of the main reasons for this is because students have not acquired a solid learning foundation. Students can attain a solid learning foundation by learning how to focus on one thing at a time—in other words, students learn how to collect all their thoughts and concentrate on what they have to do at the present moment.

It is through quietness and calmness that students can achieve this. Teaching is almost impossible when a student’s mind is impatient and wandering around.

From the many years of our teaching experience, meditating and relaxing the mind and body before a class has allowed students to become aware of their own breathing, seize the moment, and remove all distractions. This technique proves to work in other learning environments too.
